The police in Punjab’s Amritsar have registered a case in connection with the attempted sacrilege incident at the Golden Temple. The incident, that took place on Saturday, saw a youth lynched by angry devotees after he tried to barge into the reserved area where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept.

The police said they have registered a case against an unidentified person. Meanwhile, the autopsy of the deceased youth will be conducted on Sunday, the police added.

The incident took the state by storm as politicians cutting across party lines condemned the sacrilege bid at the holy place. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has ordered a probe into the incident to find the “real conspirators”.

Here’s all that has happened so far in the attempted sacrilege case.

WHAT HAPPENED AT GOLDEN TEMPLE?
According to the police, the youth, aged 24-25, was seen jumping over a railing inside the Golden Temple during the Rehraas Sahib Paath (evening prayers). He then allegedly picked up the sword kept in front of the Guru Granth Sahib inside the reserved area which is only open to Granthi Sikhs.

Following this, angry devotees overpowered the youth and beat him to death.

“Today, one 24-25-year-old man barged inside [Golden Temple] where the holy book [Guru Granth Sahib] is kept. He tried desecrating it with a sword; was taken out by Sangat people; died in the altercation,” said Parminder Singh Bhandal, DCP (law and order), Amritsar (city).

The body of the accused was taken for post-mortem, said DCP Singh.

No identification document was recovered from the body, the police said.

In a social media post, Bhai Gurpreet Singh Randhawa, Executive member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), said, “I condemn the unfortunate incident at Shri Amritsar Sahib, Punjab Government should investigate immediately.”

HOW DID POLITICAL LEADERS REACT?
In a Twitter post in Hindi and Punjabi, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal said, “The incident of sacrilege at Golden Temple today is very sad. Everybody is in shock. This could be a big conspiracy. The culprits should get the harshest punishment. God bless Punjab and Punjabis.”

Former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal said the incident was “deeply shocking and exceedingly painful”. He added that the crime was too reprehensible for words and has caused “deep anguish and outrage in the minds of the Sikh masses” all over the world.

He also said that the “possibility of a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the incident cannot be ruled out”. “The whole conspiracy needs to be probed, exposed and those behind it given exemplary punishment,” Parkash Singh Badal said.

His son and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed “shock and disbelief at the most heinous outrage of the attempt to commit sacrilege at our highest and the holiest shrine Sachkhand Shri Harmandar Sahib.”

In a statement, Badal said that it is impossible to believe that this could be the act of just one person. “There clearly is a deep-rooted conspiracy behind it. Never since the Mughals, the Masands and the Operation Bluestar has the sanctity of Shri Harmandar Sahib been made the target of such outrage . This is beyond belief.”

R P Singh, national spokesperson of the BJP, condemned the alleged sacrilege attempt and demanded that the Punjab government hand over the case to the CBI.

“Real footage of an unfortunate and painful sacrilege incident at Sri Darbar Sahib,” he captioned the video. In the video, a man can be seen jumping over a railing during prayers before he was stopped by devotees.

Sirsa also alleged that there is a conspiracy behind the sacrilege attempt. He said he spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured his support and promised an inquiry into the matter.

“Punjab government should ensure that the conspiracy behind this sacrilege attempt is exposed and shared with public. However, Congress track record is they won’t act on sacrilege. So, we assure Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee every kind of support from the Government of India to address the raging issue of sacrilege,” Sirsa said in a Twitter post.
